ADIDAS NMD R1: Ice Purple Review

April 29, 2017

Hey all!

After lusting after a pair of adidas NMD’s for a few months, I was lucky enough to get my hands on a pair of them 2 months ago! I wanted to give myself a few weeks to really wear them and test them out before typing up a post with my thoughts on the shoe.

Let’s start off with the basics:

Aesthetics:
  • Materials: Black mesh upper, ice purple with black and gold accent “chips”, white Boost mid-sole, black outsole
  • Color: Black/White/Ice Purple/Gold
  • Price: $130 Retail

Comfort:
  • Level (1-10): On a scale from 1-10, with 1 being uncomfortable and 10 I’d give these a 6.5. They’re definitely not the most comfortable shoe I own to date, but I’m not saying they AREN’T comfortable, by any means!
  • Sole: Although these shoes feature a Boost sole, the NMD’s sole definitely feels tougher and less bouncy when compared to the adidas Ultraboost.
  • Breathability: The mesh upper makes for a breathable shoe, which helps keep you avoid sweaty feet! It also helps with the comfortability factor.
  • Other: The mesh backing by the heel is a bit stiff when you first wear it. I wore these shoes with ankle “no show” socks the first couple of wears, and boy did I regret that! It kept scraping into the back of my heel :( Obviously, a quick and easy fix for this problem is to wear higher socks with the shoe until they break in and become more soft on the back so don’t let this deter you from getting a pair for yourself!

What I love about these:
  • The overall aesthetic is a win in my book! I like the look of a minimal sleek looking sneaker, especially in the ice purple colorway. It looks very simple at first glance, but upon closer inspection the small details in the ice purple and gold accented chips really bring some cool tones to an otherwise simplistic shoe.
  • Going off my above note, the simplicity makes it effortless to pair these shoes with my everyday uniform (skinny jeans and a black tee).
  • Although I did mention the toughness of the sole, I do appreciate the sleeker look of the NMD’s boost sole versus an Ultraboost sole. It looks sleeker and less puffy :)
  • These sneakers are also incredibly easy to put on, as the shoe features a small tab on the back to help you get in and out of the shoe quickly.

Things to Note:
  • Although these shoes are supposed to be “Ice Purple”, the color comes off as more of a off white with a slight purple tint. I had initially thought the back upper tab would be more of a soft lavender color so this is something you want to keep in mind if you’re thinking of purchasing the shoe in the same color way. TL;DR
  • The adidas NMD’s are a great lookin’ sleek pair of shoes to add to your collection!
